Section3. The modifications of the Uniform Fire Code and the Uniform Building
Code made by Sections 1 and 2 of this ordinance are reasonably necessary
because of local climatic, geographical and topographical conditions, all roofing
materials are to be class "B" or better. The City of Petaluma is characterized by a
valley floor surrounded and intermingled with steep terrain, containing areas
which are very susceptible to wildland fires. Such fires expose residential and
other development within the City to an increased risk of conflagration. Wind is a
predominant factor in the spread of fire in that burning embers are carried with
the wind to a4acent exposed areas. Petaluma has a characteristic wind which
originates from a marine influence and becomes a factor in the control of fires.
Further, in the dry season, Petaluma experiences winds at significant velocity
which is recognized by Fire Officials to be a significant concern with regard to fire
spread.
Section 4. The City Clerk is hereby directed to file this ordinance, specifically
the modification of the Uniform fire Code and the Uniform Building Code with the
Department of Housing and Community Development.
