AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING RETAINING WALLS CONSTRUCTED WITHIN
THE CITY LIMITS TO COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENT
OF MATERIALS USED AND HEIGHT. MODIFICATION TO SECTION 301(b)
EXEMPTION NO. 5, AND SECTION 2516(C)10 OF THE
1985 UNIFORM BUILDING CODE
l . Amend Section 301(b) , Exemption #5 of the 1985 UBC.
Revised Section 301(b) , Exemption #5 shall read as follows:
"Retaining walls which are not over two (2) feet in height measured
from top of the footing to the top of the wall, unless supporting a
surcharge, or impounding flammable liquids."
2. Property line retaining walls may be of all heart redwood up to two (2 )
feet in height; property line retaining walls up to four (4) feet shall
be of pressure treated lumber; property line retaining walls over four
(4) feet to be engineered.
3. On -site retaining walls up to four (4) feet may be of all heart redwood
or pressure treated; over four (4) feet walls shall be engineered and
set back a minimum distance equal to the height of the wall from the
property line or foundation of the building.
4. Height of walls are measured from the bottom of finished board or top
of footing to top of finished board.

Section #3: Details for redwood retaining wall dated 3/16/88 and details for
pressure treated retaining walls dated 3/16/88 shall be the Standard and
part of this Ordinance.

GENERAL NOTES
'DOUGLASFIR CONSTRUCTION
1. All lumber shall be 'Construction- Rough (Rough Full Sawn - Unsurfaced
lumber ,cut ,to full; specified size)..
2. Posts shall. be Grade :No. 1 and facing 'boards (lagging) shall be Grade
No..2, or better, conforming to current AWPA* Grading Rules.
3. Each piece of 'lumber shall be ,grade stamped by an agency- certified by
'the Board of Review of the Aroericah Lumber Standards Committee and
manufactured in accordance, with. Produce Standard 20-70,, as published
by the 'Department of Commerce.
4. All lumber and posts 'shall be pressure treated for, preservation in
accordancewith current. AWPB** standards for ground-confact use and
shall comply with' current Uniform Building Code Standard No. 25-12
(UBC STDS.)..
5. The. following AWPB quality standards are approved for the pressure
treatment of lumber and posts:
AWPB LR�-221: Pressure treated: with waterborne preservatives
(-ACA, CCA - See Note 6) .
- AWPB' LP-33's Pressure treated: with light petroleum penta
solution.
- AWPB'- LP-44: P.ressure treated with volatile solvent (LPG) penta
solution.
AWPB L-P-55: Pressure treated, with creosote or 'creosote coal -tar
.solution.
AWP& LP-77: Pressure treated with heav,.y petroleum
•solvent-penta solution.
6. Retention of preservatives shall be equal to, or. greater than,, the
minimum retention .specified. for the AWPB quality standard used,
except retention of preservatives for pressure treatment with
waterborne preservatives (AWPB Std'. LP-22, ACA or CCA) shall be
equal to, ±or greater than, 0.60' pcf. This higher retention shall be
branded or stamped on the lumber..
7. Treatment of `lumber and posts shall conform to current AWPA***
Sfandard'C2.
8. All preservatives must meet the requirements of the current AWPA
standards.
9.. Handling and care of ,pressure treated' wood product's shall conform to
the requirements of AWPA Standard' M4..
'10. All cuts, ;holes and injuries such as abrasions and nail holes shall be
field treated with applications of preservatives in accordance with
AWPA Standard M4.
11. 'Each piece of treated wood produce ,shall _b_e. ,,legibly branded, marked
or' otherwise have permanently affiked, the following information:
identity of the treating plan and the year treated; the preservative
symbol; e.g.., ACA, CCA, etc.; the AWPB Quality Mark; the legend,
e.,g,i, AWPB LP-,22; LP-44, etc.; the', words °GROUND CONTACT",
name .or ,trademark of the supervising Quality Control Agency;
retention, etc. Refer- to the specific' AWPB standard used for
additional.' information which may be included.
