FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: OCTOBER 7-13,2012
IrWHEREAS, the City of Petaluma is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all
its residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and
homes are where people are at the greatest risk of experiencing a fire, where it has been
determined that residential fires kill more than 2,500 people annually in the United States; and
1
WHEREAS,the surest way to protect yourself and your family from the effects of a
residential fire is to have working smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system installed in your
home; and
WHEREAS, one-third of American families who have an escape plan estimate they
would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life threatening. The
actual time available for safe escape is often less, so every family should have and practice a
home escape plan to ensure everyone gets out safely in the event of a fire; and
WHEREAS,by providing Petaluma residents with fire safety information, the Petaluma
Fire Department empowers its citizens with the information and skills needed to improve the
safety of their home environments and in the community at large; and
WHEREAS, the 2012 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Have 2 Ways Out!"effectively
serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to keep our families safe from fire
during Fire Prevention Week and year-round.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED, that I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma,
along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby proclaim October 7-13, 2012 as
Fire Prevention Week in the City of Petaluma, and urge all Petaluma residents to practice their
home fire escape plans during Fire Prevention Week and to support the public safety activities
and efforts of Petaluma's Fire Department.
